Crimplene - forgotten fabric

by Martina Marekova January 17, 2018

I found a beautiful crimplene. Strong yellow with ornamental texture and plain brown one. I'm holding them, trying to figure out, what to make out of it. Oh, you have no idea, what's a crimplene?

Dostal sa mi do rúk krásny krimplen. Žltý s ornamentálnou textúrou a planý hnedý. Držím ich v rukách a premýšľam, čo s nimi. Neviete, čo je krimplen?

Crimplene is a synthetical material, sort of a polyester knitwear, which was produced in 60's, and in then communistic Czechoslovakia it was in 70's. It's absolutely non-breathable material, which doesn't crease, but people extremely sweat in it, so it's popularity quickly faded and its production soon ended. People simply couldn't bear in itchy material, which made them to sweat on top of it.

Crimplen is not produced these days anymore, bud there are other synthetical materials, which are fairly comparable to my opinion. Consider boom of scuba materials (especially the printed ones) in past years - basically similar materials, differing just in thickness and elasticity.

V dnešnej dobe sa klasický krimplen už nevyrába, ale zato sa vyrábajú iné polyesterové resp. syntetické materiály, ktoré sú (podľa môjho názoru) porovnateľné. Ak si zoberieme boom scuba materiálov pár rokov dozadu, najmä tie s potlačou, v podstate ide o veľmi podobný materiál, len s rôznymi hrúbkami a elasticitou látky.

So when I was holding these two crimplene pieces, admiring this 40 years old beauty, I had to consider the fact, that even though I can sew with it, but not whatever. It would be a beautiful dress, but itching and sweaty within 5 minutes, so I had to figure out a garment, which won't be worn on skin. And a bomber jacket was born.

Takže keď som držala tieto dva kúsky krimplenu v ruke, okrem kochania sa nad tuto cca 40 ročnou krásou som musela brať do úvahy, že síce môžem šiť, ale asi nie hocičo. Boli by to nádherné šaty, ale do 5 min prepotené a kúsali by, takže som sa sústredila na niečo voľnejšie, nositeľné nie priamo no koži. A bombera bola na svete.

Few words about a production itself... All crimplene had to be secured, so we ironed in vliseline on inner side. I didn't want to risk that zipper or a pocket will pull out while wearing. I wanted to make it in a sporty style, so we added 3 ribbons from neck down to sleeve). We made two welt pockets, fully lined it and since it's a loose cut, it fits size S-L.

Chcela som bombere dať športový nádych, preto som pridala miesto troch pásikov tri stuhy (klasicky, kde by som ja nedala stuhy?). Vrecká sme dali lištové, bundička je plne podšitá a keďže je to voľnejší bomberový strih, sedí na veľkosť 36-40.

In case you are interested to sew with crimplene, look for it in granny's loft or in your tailor's storage (only older tailors). Every tailor is collecting fabric, or they are being gifted to them, so over years they usually have a great collection. And in those piles you can find a treasure, such as old crimplene :)

Ak si chcete vyrobiť niečo z krimplenu, nájdete ho na povale u vašej babky, resp. v zásobách pani krajčírok staršej generácie. Každá krajčírka priebežne zbiera látky, resp. jej zostávajú zo zákazok, a to sa po rokoch dokáže nahromadiť. A v tých hromadách dokážu byť poklady, ako napríklad taký krimplen :)

Všetko SLOW - pomalá móda
Všetko SLOW - pomalá móda

by Martina Marekova January 17, 2019
